  • modeled after Johnny Smith's custom
        DeAngelico New York Special

  • very woody and natural, sounds like an
        amplified acoustic rather than an electric

  • although '63 serial no., some '62 parts no
        longer used in '63, eg, pickup, pot & knob

  • first generation floating non-adjustable mini-
        humbucking pickup with tortoise plastic under
        cover (the screw holes were non-operational)

  • has great dimensional sound (between the
        X-brace, scale length & string tension)

  • 3-1/8" deep (not as much as an L-5)

  • 25" scale (unique to this model)

  • single rounded Venetian cutaway

  • sunburst finish with single bound f-holes

  • carved spruce, X-braced, top

  • tiger maple back & sides

  • 3-piece curly maple neck with 2 walnut strips

  • ebony fretboard with abolone single & double
        "diagonal cut-block" inlays

  • pearl script "Gibson" and 5-piece "split-
        diamond" headstock inlays

  • varitone Johnny Smith gold tailpiece (small
        L-5 style)

  • 6-ply black & creme binding and purfling on
        top; 5-ply on headstock & fretboard; and
        3-ply on back

  • marbled pickguard with 5-ply binding

  • volume knob on pickguard

  • adjustable ebony bridge

  • gold tuners

  • introduced 1961; discontinued 1989
