1984 Gibson
"Super 400" Redux
18" Archtop Electric
as the story goes, this guitar was reborn
from the Gibson scap heap, allegedly
salvaged from a dumpster at the Gibson
factory in Kalamazoo
of course, more colorfully, it could have been
the casualty of love scorned!
and in the end, a "Frankenstein" rebirth!
the headstock was sawed off, and missing,
to be replaced by a vintage, mahogany Les
Paul Custom headstock
the headstock/neck joint was strengthened
with two ebony splines
the guitar's body had been sawed in half at
the waist, and was reattached using layers
of cardboard soaked in marine epoxy glue
automotive bondo repair on the lower waist
side where there was excessive destruction
by the saw cut
it now weighs a ton!
two Seymour Duncan "Seth Lover" gold-
finished pickups
notwithstanding its earlier destruction and
reincarnation, it now has kick-ass jazz
sound; and can get really loud with the tone
staying in tact
carved spruce top and carved maple back,
both with honey blonde natural finish
curly maple sides
5-piece curly maple neck with walnut strips
multi-bound ebony fretboard with pearl,
split-block, inlay
pearl script "Gibson" and "split diamond"
peghead inlay
multi-ply creme & black binding on top
and back
vintage Super 400 5-ply pickguard
vintage 60's L-5 gold tailpiece
vintage Gibson skirted knobs with gold
reflector caps
ebony bridge base with "propeller" inlays
and a tune-o-matic bridge
old German gold Schaller M6L tuners with
gold keystone buttons
introduced 1951; still in production
